Career Counseling or Rule 1

Career Counseling: A Holistic Approach

Author: Vernon G Zunker

This highly successful book has been called the most comprehensive text on the market, providing students with needed career theory as well as practical techniques and examples. Through the author's clear writing style, case examples, tables, and exercises, students develop a solid understanding of the theoretical models of career counseling and are thoroughly exposed to the practical information on how to effectively counsel clients about career issues. As demonstrated by the text's new subtitle, 'A Holistic Approach,' this substantially revised Seventh Edition reflects the growing emphasis on looking at the "whole person"--values, temperament, talents, and passions--to determine his or her best career fit.

Books about: Patton on Leadership or Organizational Culture and Leadership

Rule #1: The Simple Strategy for Successful Investing in Only 15 Minutes a Week!

Author: Phil Town

Phil Town is now a very wealthy man, but he wasn't always. In fact, he was living on a salary of $4000 a year when some well-timed advice launched him down a highway of investing self-education that revealed what the true "rules" are and how to make them work in one's favor. Chief among them, of course, is "rule #1": "don't lose money." Other rules are: don't diversify...think like an owner, not an investor ... never, ever be seduced into thinking the market is efficient. Town also believes strongly in "betting on the jockey," putting your faith in managers who've proven their financial mettle. Not only does Town reveal fresh methods for identifying who the truly reliable managers are, but he shows you how to test whether they really have faith in the businesses they're running.

By far, the most controversial of the audiobook's assertions will be that giant 401(k) type mutual funds can't help but regress to the mean, and in the next twenty years, the mean could be very disappointing indeed. There's a very real chance that a 401(k) investor could see his holdings not grow at all in the next few decades. Fortunately, Town's stockpicking techniques are meant to walk investing phobes through the do-it-yourself process, equipping them with the tools they need to make quantum leaps toward financial security.

Rule #1 says something new, and it says it in a way that every listener can understand.

Publishers Weekly

For amateur investors who admire the incredible returns produced by Benjamin Graham-Warren Buffett-style value investing but can't figure out how to replicate these billionaires' methods at home, Town's investment guide is manna from heaven. A former river-rafting guide, Town learned how to calculate such crucial numbers as Return on Investment Capital and Equity Growth Rate from "Wolf," a wealthy rafter whom Town saved from a rapid in 1980. Under Wolf's tutelage, Town learned how to turn $1,000 into $1 million in five years, but the selection of lucrative stocks took weeks of library research. In this engaging and accessible book, Town shows readers how to replicate that sort of exhaustive market research on the Internet-and shorten the research time to just a few hours per stock. Fans of The Intelligent Investor will recognize that Town's Rule #1 formula-"1) Find a wonderful business, 2) Know what it's worth as a business, 3) Buy it at 50 percent off, 4) Repeat until very rich"-is a variation of Benjamin Graham's investment philosophy. (Graham and Buffett are cited heavily throughout the book.) But Town's ability to break down that philosophy into a detailed, step-by-step program that can be understood by any reader with basic math skills is unique. His chummy, reassuring tone ("If you're finding yourself already a bit overwhelmed, take a deep breath") will leave readers feeling empowered and ready to manage their money themselves. What People Are Saying

Extraordinarily readable…provides investors with surefire tools to outperform costly advisors. Follow Town’s simple, time-tested precepts, and even unsophisticated investors will leave most mutual fund managers in the dust.” —Arthur Levitt, author of Take on the Street and former Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission

Rule #1 is an investment Bible for our time. In fun, easy-to-understand words, Phil Town tells you how to buy quality stocks at a discount.” —Rich Karlgaard, publisher, Forbes magazine, and author of LIFE 2.0

“For the individual investor, Rule No. 1 should be, ‘Read Rule #1.’ This book debunks a lot of myths in the market and provides pearls of common-sense wisdom…Indeed, Rule #1 rules.” —Gene Marcial, Senior Writer, Business Week

Rule #1’s common-sense, pragmatic approach is money in the bank.  This step-by-step guide is methodically researched and terrifically accessible … Can you really beat the mutual fund mangers and so-called experts at their own game?  Hell yes!” —Jonathan Hoenig, Portfolio Manager, Capitalistpig Hedge Fund, and regular contributor to Fox News Channel

Rule #1 is probably one of the most inclusive, no nonsense, fundamental books about investing in the stock market I’ve ever read. This book is a must-read for everyone; from beginner students of the market to super know-it-alls.” —Danielle Hughes, President and CEO, Divine Capital Markets LLC

A refreshing departure from those boring investing books… If you're tired of being shut out of how exactly the rich guys on Wall Street make money, this important book will teach you how to run with the bulls. It's priceless.” —Elizabeth MacDonald, Senior Editor at Forbes Magazine; regular, “Forbes on Fox”

Few texts have been favored with such success. Fifteen after its introduction,The Art of Public Speaking remains the leading text in its discipline. The Art of Public Speaking is successful because it works well for both students and instructors. Instructors have come to rely on its careful explanations, its reinforcing examples, and its attention to the basics that help their tentative students become competent speakers. Instructors have also come to rely on the most comprehensive package of support materials available with any public speaking text. Meticulously prepared by the author to support and reflect the text, the ancillary materials allow the least experienced teaching assistant and the busiest professor to teach with confidence.

The Long Tail Revised and Updated Edition or The Greatest Salesman in the World Part II

The Long Tail, Revised and Updated Edition: Why the Future of Business Is Selling Less of More

Author: Chris Anderson

The New York Times bestseller that introduced the business world to a future that's already here -- now in paperback with a new chapter about Long Tail Marketing and a new epilogue.

Winner of the Gerald Loeb Award for Best Business Book of the Year.

In the most important business book since The Tipping Point, Chris Anderson shows how the future of commerce and culture isn't in hits, the high-volume head of a traditional demand curve, but in what used to be regarded as misses -- the endlessly long tail of that same curve.

What People Are Saying

Anyone who cares about media...must read this book. --Rob Glaser, CEO, RealNetworks

The Long Tail is a book for the Head -- provocative and insightful. It belongs on your shelf between Tipping Point and Freakonomics, offering great insight into the next generation of internet revolution and opportunity. --Reed Hastings, CEO, Netflix

The Long Tail is a rare achievement: it takes something seemingly familiar -- the realm of buying and selling -- and makes us think about it in a completely new way. This is a remarkably smart book, and also a refreshingly optimistic look at the new rules of a world in which everyone can find something different to enjoy. --James Suroweicki, author of The Wisdom of Crowds

Of all the books about the revolution that the new economy is, this is the first to deliver on the promise. Anderson maps as compellingly as anyone could just what is different, and critically important about the world digital technologies has created. There isn't an economy here. There are economies. Understanding them, and how they flourish, is the key to sensible policy and successful business. Wipe the shelf clear of new economy books. This is all you'll need. --Larry Lessig, professor, Stanford Law School; chairman, Creative Commons

The Long Tail catches the world's economy at a fundamental nexus of change. Blockbuster models, Pareto's Law, ever-shortening life cycles, rock star dependencies—all are receding in relevance and importance. In their place a new Internet-enabled economy is embracing more collaborative, participative, and idiosyncratic offerings, and knocking the Old Guard on its backside in the process. Chris Anderson depicts the emerging dynamics of this new world with insight, wit, and style, so put this book atop the rest of your bedside reading and enjoy. --Geoffrey Moore, author of Crossing the Chasm

The Long Tail breaks fundamentally new ground in economics. Chris Anderson takes the reader into a new world of buyers and sellers connected at the outer edges of demand and literally proves that there is a market for almost anything. Engaging, insightful, useful, stories well told, The Long Tail is one of those books that leads the reader to a new view of how the world works. --Peter Schwartz, chairman of the Global Business Network and author of The Art of the Long View

Chris Anderson's timing with the "Long Tail" concept is absolutely perfect. The combination of Internet penetration with the expansion of global online markets has opened up opportunities that few could have ever imagined. --Eric Schmidt, CEO, Google

I can't begin to tell you how thrilled I was by The Long Tail. It very clearly articulated something that I believe strongly -– electronic distribution of content and access to vast libraries will open up major new businesses and amazing user experiences. --Howard Look, former VP, TiVo

If you haven't already read The Long Tail, you'd better –- it's the new Tipping Point. Chris has crafted a very unique view of how the Web is driving new purchasing behaviors and marketing phenomena. This is actually incredibly stimulating as a notion for all marketers. --Andy Lark, former CEO, Sun Microsystems

A Leaders Legacy or Graphic Artists Guild Handbook

A Leader's Legacy

Author: Barry Z Posner

In this provocative book, leadership experts and authors of the best-selling The Leadership Challenge, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner take on a unique challenge and explore the question of leadership and legacy. Kouzes and Posner examine in twenty-two chapters the critical questions all leaders must ask themselves in order to leave a lasting impact. These powerful essays are grouped into four categories: Significance, Relationships, Aspirations, and Courage. In each essay the authors consider a thorny and often ambiguous issue with which today’s leaders must grapple issues—such as how leaders serve and sacrifice, why leaders need loving critics, why leaders should want to be liked, why leaders can't take trust for granted, why it’s not just the leader’s vision, why failure is always an option, why it takes courage to “make a life,” how to liberate the leader in everyone, and ultimately, how the legacy you leave is the life you lead.

Supercapitalism or The Winning Investment Habits of Warren Buffett and George Soros

Supercapitalism: The Transformation of Business, Democracy, and Everyday Life

Author: Robert B Reich

From one of America's foremost economic and political thinkers comes a vital analysis of our new hypercompetitive and turbo-charged global economy and the effect it is having on American democracy. With his customary wit and insight, Reich shows how widening inequality of income and wealth, heightened job insecurity, and corporate corruption are merely the logical results of a system in which politicians are more beholden to the influence of business lobbyists than to the voters who elected them.

Powerful and thought-provoking, Supercapitalism argues that a clear separation of politics and capitalism will foster an enviroment in which both business and government thrive, by putting capitalism in the service of democracy, and not the other way around.

The New York Times - Robert Frank

In Supercapitalism, Robert B. Reich argues that the current political debate in the United States is drowning in misdirected moral outrage. We cannot hope to solve our problems, he says, without first understanding the forces that have caused them…Supercapitalism is a grand debunking of the conventional wisdom in the style of John Kenneth Galbraith…the main thrust of Reich's argument is right on target. Those who seize their opportunities in highly competitive environments tend to survive and prosper. "To confuse greed with opportunity," he writes, "is to confound desire with availability." It's often useful to get angry when things aren't going well. But moral outrage is counterproductive unless directed at the right targets. By focusing our attention on those who continue to block effective campaign finance reform, Reich shows that he can spot a worthy target when he sees one.

The Winning Investment Habits of Warren Buffett and George Soros

Author: Mark Tier

"Peter Lynch, who produced an annual return of 29 percent during the years he ran the Fidelity Magellan Fund; legendary investors such as Bernard Baruch, Sir John Templeton, and Philip Fisher; and every one of dozens of other highly successful investors (and commodity traders) I've studied and worked with, all practice exactly the same mental habits as Buffet, Icahn, and Soros, without exception."--excerpt from Becoming Rich
